Creating A Positive Attitude

Much has been said about the importance of having a positive attitude to help guide you through life. Books have been written by dozens of authors outlining dozens of ways to gain such an attitude. If you are interested in developing a positive attitude, I have put together 10 simple steps to get you started. These steps are condensed versions of the many “rules” that I have learned over the years and are meant to be a starting point on your journey to a more positive attitude.

We control our attitude. It is not something that is genetically or environmentally determined. Each of us can decide what our attitude is going to be. We can choose to have a positive attitude to life, or not. A ready smile is a gift to all those around us. A positive word can be an inspiration and an encouragement to others. The positive you give out will be returned to you many times over.

You may be “putting up” with more than you realize. Think about the things that you tolerate, the way you are spoken to, the way you are treated by some people, the actions you find offensive but you tolerate anyway. Just becoming aware is the first step to eliminating them. The things we tolerate infect our attitude, have a negative impact and do a great deal of damage to our interactions with others.

Let go of living in the past and in the future, just enjoy the present. Take time to have fun, life is precious. Plan for the future but enjoy today, whatever you may be doing. Even the most disliked tasks can have a positive effect if you have the right attitude. Think how good it will feel when you’ve completed the task. Count your blessings.

Stop wasting energy on being irritated and annoyed at things that don’t really matter. Ask yourself, “Will this help to achieve my goals?” and “Will this improve my life, my relationships or my ability to earn the income I need?” If the answer is no then let go of them, put a positive thought into your mind and move on. My wife has a phrase she has used often, “In fifty years it won’t matter anyhow.” Chances are that it won’t matter in fifty months, weeks, days, hours or even fifty minutes from now.

Let go of being critical of others. When we judge others we leave the door open for others to judge us. Better that we spend that energy and time improving ourselves. We tend to judge the worst of others against the best of ourselves. If we did it the other way round we may not have room to be critical of someone else. Try instead to listen and understand the other person, see the best of others and encourage them to excel in those areas. As you become less critical and more accepting, you will find that you are more accepted in return. Remember you will get back from others that which they see in you.

When you live a life that is ethical, moral, truthful and honest you will develop an attitude of acceptance of yourself, you will have the courage of your convictions and a strength of character that will attract others to you. This will then allow you to develop to your fullest potential, benefitting not only yourself but all those that have been attracted to you. Values are something you practice all the time. They are not something you can turn on and off at a whim. The good news is that you can learn to develop them.

Inside each of us a voice resides, not the voice of all those negative people that populate our life, but our voice. We have to take time to listen to it and learn to trust in our own voice. If what your inner voice is saying is moral, legal, ethical and will not harm others then listen to YOUR inner voice, not the negative of others. Take responsibility for yourself and your life then go forward. Have you ever wondered why crab fishermen put two crabs in the basket? Because one crab would just climb out, but two crabs will pull each other back. People are like that, they want us to stay in their comfort zone and keep them company. Don’t let others make your decisions for you. DECIDE FOR YOURSELF!

HAVE FUN AND ENJOY HUMOR Enjoy your life, laugh a lot, create fun experiences for yourself and those around you. Successful people not only have positive attitudes but they play as hard as they work. They never lose the child that is inside them.

The meaningful relationships that you develop in life will need time and energy invested if they are to be sustained. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

“You can’t love others if you don’t love yourself” is a very true statement, as we cannot give what we don’t posses. An attitude of love for yourself, who you are as a person, will allow you to interact with others in the same way. Your love will strengthen them and allow them to grow as people. The love you give will be returned to you but… you must give before you receive.

Positive people, live for today, remember the past and look forward to tomorrow.
